Snow falls at a near white-out pace as we head down the road to the farm
Maybe we have been spoiled. For the last few years, we have been able to work through the majority of winter on many of our outdoor projects. During the winter of 2010-11, we worked almost non-stop on completing the barn. We rarely had temperatures below 30 – and just a few small snowfalls. The next two winters – we put in fencing, built the new chicken coop and were able to put in all of our vineyard posts as Mother Nature remained kind with less than average snowfalls, and above average temperatures. Not so for the winter of 2013-2014!
The garden is in a deep slumber under a heavy coat of snow.
Winter has some back with a vengeance – and seems like it will be staying for a while! With close to 6″ of snow falling yesterday – and another 1 to 2″ coming again today – the farm is covered in a thick blanket of snow. Unfortunately, it won’t be going anywhere soon – we have had a run of below freezing temperatures for what seems like a month – and this week we are expected to drop down to as low as -10 to -15 on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Our dreams of having the new hoop house erected by the end of January, and the Cabin Project started by March now seem all but laughable.
All we can do is wait patiently for winter to break it’s hold. We thought we would use the down-time to stroll around the farm and share some winter pictures – we hope you enjoy! Mary and Jim
The Chicken Coop is surrounded by snow – but keeping our chickens safely out of the elements. Needless to say – they want no part of being outside right now.
You know it’s bad out when the snow plows begin to gang up on the highway leading to the farm. It was like our own personal escort.

It’s easy to find our lab in the snow! I think Jazzy was the only one enjoying the visit to the farm.
Here is a little winter color! The cayenne peppers are drying nicely in the barn – hung from the rafters.
The wood piles are covered in thick snow. We have used more wood in our fireplace this year than we have the last three combined!
No – this is not one of our homemade wood baskets…This is actually the Longaberger Basket Company Headquarters. The building is about 5 miles from the farm.
No one will be sitting down on on the bench and enjoying the view of the vineyard for awhile!
