5 Ways To Know That Garden Season Is Here!

Garden season is finally here!!!  Spring has arrived and the early crops of onions, lettuce, snow peas and more are in the ground and ready to grow. So for today’s Sunday update – we thought we would share 5 ways we can always tell garden season is upon us.  If you are a fellow gardener – I am sure that at least a few of these will hit home!

1. The “why is that sore” question?

Planting all those spring crops can be quite the workout!

Planting all those spring crops can be quite the workout!

You wake up, roll out of bed – and try to figure out what previous day’s gardening activity has caused a certain body part to tell you that you may have overworked it. 🙂  Let’s see – for me today it is the right elbow joint. I have determined it has to be from the overuse of a post hole digger yesterday. For Mary – its the process of bending down to realize her hamstrings are a bit sore after planting 100 feet of onion and pea rows! But for both of us – we refer to it as a “good sore” – knowing that its a more productive workout than any gym membership could ever give us!

2.  Your kitchen table becomes an overnight greenhouse

Every gardener who grows their own plants from seed should know this one.  As the temperature begins to warm up – we anxiously begin to set our plants outside to grow in the warming rays of the springtime sunshine.  That is, until the weather forecast calls for a night of freezing temps! It’s then of course that our kitchen table, countertops and everything else with a flat service becomes a temporary warming spot for plants overnight.

3. The development of a great “Farmers Tan”.

Yes, we all know it too well. The great brown tan on your arms and legs – followed by the blinding white skin of where the sun’s rays couldn’t reach!

4. Shower water takes on the shades of earth.

Somehow - the shower water this time of year always turns the color of soil the first few minutes - washing off the days dirt!

I can always tell its garden season when the water that hits the floor during the first few minutes of my shower is the earthy color of dirt! Add in the fact that no matter how hard I try – I always find myself in a meeting or other business function checking to make sure that I did indeed get all of the dirt out from underneath my fingernails – and  usually finding out that I didn’t. 🙂

And last but not least….

5. You can’t help but be happy!

How can you not be happy spending time outdoors soaking up the sunshine!

That’s right – even through all the sore muscles, the loss of kitchen counter space and dirty fingernails – you can’t help but have a smile on your face during gardening season. Spending time out in the sunlight, putting your hands down in sweet smelling soil and breathing in all the fresh air you can is by far the best medicine ever invented to clear the mind and make you feel great!

We wish everyone today a Happy Easter and a wonderful Spring!
