Maple Cinnamon Rolls Recipe – Using Real Maple Syrup

Maple Cinnamon Rolls – Move over pumpkin, maple is taking over when it comes to the most requested Autumn flavor!

Maple glazed, maple cinnamon roll. Absolutely delicious!

In the past few years, pumpkin flavored everything has shown up in restaurants beginning mid-September and lasting through November. But this year, Maple has become the ‘new pumpkin’!

Maple Glazed Donuts have been popular for a long time, but this year, take a look around and you will find maple oatmeal, maple cinnamon bagels, maple flavored coffee and lattes, and everything else maple. That also includes Maple Cinnamon Rolls!

I have never been a fan of maple glazed donuts. Don’t get me wrong, I love the donuts, but the maple flavoring was so strong, that the flavor of the donut and of course, the cream filling would be lost. This was because most donut glaze recipes use maple flavoring rather than true maple syrup.

Most maple cinnamon rolls recipes also call for artificial maple flavoring. This isn’t something that would typically be found in a household pantry, however, fresh and local maple syrup is readily available and already in many homes.

So when it came down to making homemade maple cinnamon rolls, I used real maple syrup and the results were outstanding! There was no longer an overtaking maple flavor, just a wonderful hint of maple in each and every bite. Of course, if you want more of a maple syrup taste, you can always drizzle pure maple syrup over the entire cinnamon roll when eating. Why not?

Use pure maple syrup from a local source whenever possible.

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a small saucepan add milk and butter and heat until the butter has fully melted, stirring frequently.

Remove from heat and let cool to 120 degree F. Whisk in the yeast and let proof for 10 minutes.

When the yeast has proofed, pour the mixture into your mixing bowl and add one cup of flour, maple syrup and egg.

Mix until incorporated. Add the remainder of the flour and salt and continue mixing with a dough hook, adding more flour as necessary to keep the dough from sticking to the sides of the bowl. Mix for 4-5 minutes.

Remove the dough from the bowl and place onto a floured surface. Knead by hand until very smooth.

Add the filling and then roll the long side before cutting the rolls.

When the dough is smooth, place in a lightly oiled bowl and cover. Let rise in a warm location until doubled in size (about 2 hours).

When the dough has doubled in size, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, and roll out into a 11″ x 18″ rectangle.

The Filling

Spread the room temperature butter over the dough, leaving a small area around the edge of the dough without butter.

Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon, and spread evenly over the buttered area, gently pressing it into the dough.

Place the sliced rolls in a baking dish, leaving room for them to expand before baking.

Starting on the longer side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the edge seams closed.

At 1 1/2″ intervals cut the rolls using a serrated knife. Place the rolls into a buttered 9 x 13 inch dish, leaving a space between each one. Cover, and let rise for 45 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400 degree F, and bake for 20 minutes or until the tops of the rolls are light brown. Remove from the oven and carefully invert onto a cooling rack. Let the rolls cool for 10 minutes inverted, then turn them back over to right-side-up.

Make the glaze:

Mix together the maple syrup and powdered sugar, adding more of either to reach the desired consistency. Once the rolls are cool, add the glaze over top of the rolls.

Serve warm, drizzling the tops with additional maple syrup as desired.

Enjoy!
