Our Spring Farm And Garden Photo Tour – The Farm Comes Alive!

It is time once again for a look around the farm with our annual Spring Farm & Garden Photo Tour.

And we couldn’t be happier seeing the farm come alive with all kinds of activity!

Whenever it comes time to create one of our seasonal photo tours, I am always convinced that whatever season we are in, it has now become my all-time favorite.

It is hard to believe the house has been a part of our lives now for almost 3 years. The hosta transplants have really filled the bed space up well over the last few years.

And this Spring certainly falls into that category!

With the new “tiny” cabin going up, and all kinds of new projects going on, the Spring of 2019 has been so much fun for both of us.

Yes, it is very true that there is hardly a night or morning that goes by that we might be a little sore from the day’s previous projects. Okay, perhaps sometimes its a lot sore.

But honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way. We love being outside and working at what we love. For us, it simply doesn’t get any better than that.

With that said, here is around Old World Garden Farms!

The Tiny Cabin Project

Our tiny cabin has been at the top of the list when it comes to spring projects at the farm. See : The Tiny Cabin Project

We have always wanted to create a little place on the farm for guests to enjoy an evening stay at the farm. And this certainly will fit the bill!

Most of the exterior landscaping is now complete. We added a small front patio, along with a few of our homemade Adirondack chairs and a small fire pit for guests.

For the side area, we are in the midst of creating a bistro seating area complete with LED Edison bulb string lights overhead.

They really add a lot of ambiance to the area, and take hardly any electricity to run. It makes them perfect for running on the solar power of the cabin.

All that is left is to complete the interior over the next few weeks!

The Blooming Rhododendron

As soon as our Rhododendron bursts into bloom, we know Spring has arrived!

Planted just a few years back as a tiny transplant, it has grown to anchor the flowerbed just off of our back porch.

It is always a welcome sign of color after a long, cold, dreary winter.

The Garden Is In!

The 2019 Garden is planted!

The garden is full of heirloom tomatoes, peppers and more. As you can see from the photo, the back of the garden also includes our potato crates, and our straw bale cucumber and Zucchini plants.

This year, we are growing a lot of Nasturtiums and Marigolds throughout the rows for a bit of a companion planting experiment.

The pots you see are filled with seeds of both that will add a lot of color to the rows, and hopefully a bit of pest protection as well!

Breakfast In The Pizza Oven

Although we love our homemade pizza oven for making pizza and nachos at night, we have found a new use for it the following morning!

Using cast iron pans, it has become the perfect place to make breakfast after a previous night of making pizza. And yes, we even make a few breakfast pizzas in the morning too.

The pizza oven took a few months to build, but it remains one of our all-time favorite projects at the farm.

The Beach

We jokingly call this area “The Beach” on the farm. It sits right in the middle of the property and is just a peaceful place to sit down and enjoy the day.

The Adirondack chairs are so comfy, and we love that we never have to worry about them blowing over. I think we have about 12 now all over the farm.

I have to say, building them from 2 x 4’s really has made them stand up to the test of time. See : DIY Adirondack Chair

The Fire Pit

One of our favorite places to enjoy an evening is at the fire pit at the bottom of the hill.

It’s simply hard to beat kicking back around a good fire after a long day of working on the farm.

The View From The Back Porch

When we were building the house, Mary was the one who came up with the idea to turn the house around so the porch would face the farm and not the road.

And to this day, I am forever thankful for it!

One of our favorite early morning things to do is grab a cup of coffee and sit on the back porch with the farm in full view.

The only downside – you can easily see any chores that need to be done that day! Hmmm…perhaps she had a plan all along!

The Garden Structure

Another spring project was a new entrance to the garden that we now call our Garden Structure.

We transplanted a few Hops plants in the front, and will allow them to grow up and fill the top canopy for a living roof.

It should make for a nice place to enjoy a little rest after working in the garden.

The Barn

And finally, there is the barn! It was the original structure back in 2011, and it remains a focal point today.

It will always have a special place in our hearts, especially since a large portion of it was constructed from remnants of my dad’s barn.

We hope you enjoyed a look around with our farm and garden photo tour – here is to a great summer for 2019! Jim and Mary.
