2×4 DIY Patio Table And Chair Set – Attractive, Durable And Inexpensive!

The challenge was simple – create an easy-to-build DIY patio table and chair set that is attractive, sturdy, durable, and most importantly – inexpensive!

That little challenge was sent in about a month back from Charlie, a long-time follower of our blog from Maine.

Charlie had built our 2 x 4 DIY Adirondack Chairs last year, and loved how the heavy duty construction stood up against the sometimes fierce coastal Maine weather.

And now he wanted to know if we had an answer for patio tables and chairs.

Well, if you happen to know us, you know we love a good challenge. Especially when it revolves around something we love to do like build and create!

So Charlie, consider the challenge accepted!

The Problem With Traditional Porch And Patio Furniture

Beyond just the challenge, we certainly feel Charlie’s pain when it comes to buying porch and patio furniture. Especially a patio table and chair set for eating around and sitting at to enjoy the great outdoors.

Not only can they be extremely expensive, they just never seem to hold up or last.

The chair that started all of the 2 x 4 plans – The original Adirondack Chair -still looking good after 3+ years outside at the farm.

Within a few seasons, after spending all of that money, most are ready for the trash heap. And some don’t even make it that long!

The lightweight versions are easily turned over and flipped by the slightest of storms or a strong wind. While the heavy duty versions are so ridiculously expensive that you need a small loan to afford.

But that is where this 2 x 4 DIY Patio Table and Chair Set below works wonders! Not only is it simple and easy to build with 2 x 4’s – it is strong and sturdy too.

Not only are 2 x 4’s inexpensive and easy to work with, they are amazingly strong and durable. In addition, their heavier weight makes them perfect to stand up to outdoor winds and storms.

simple tools
One of the best things about building with 2 x 4’s is that it only takes basic tools with simple construction!

That is one of the things we love about our original 2 x 4 Adirondack chairs and benches we built for the farm. They never blow away, they are comfortable – and they still look great after 3+ years outside. See : 3 Great DIY Outdoor Projects To Build

After a little messing around testing a few different looks and styles, we settled on creating a table and chair set with simple but attractive lines. After all, simple is always better!

And are they ever cost-effective to build with. Counting screws and all, the entire set of 4 chairs and table cost us a grand total of $68.45 to build!

Using 2 x 4’s for the chair frame makes for a sturdy chair that won’t blow away!

Each chair can be created and assembled with just (3) three 2 x 4 x 8’s. At $2.73 a piece here at our local lumber store, that came out to a whopping $8.19 per chair.

Better yet, the chairs can be made with just twelve simple cuts and then screwed together with ease.

THE 2 x 4 TABLE

And for the table?

Using only (3) 2 x 4 x 8’s, and (6) 2 x 4 x 10’s, you can create a 60″ long x 36″ wide table that is both strong and elegant.

And it certainly can handle some serious wind and storm action without damage. For those interested, we did include both plans together in our Etsy shop here : 2×4 DIY TABLE & CHAIR SET STEP BY STEP PLANS
