Sometimes, you have to make major changes because good things are happening. And on that note, at least that was the case for us this week.
But it really does throw a monkey-wrench in the plans when you make a big mistake in the process. And that we certainly did that this past Thursday!
Major Changes = A Big Mistake
First off, we need to apologize for anyone who was unable to get our “Why Not To Use Rock Salt On Your Driveway” article this past Thursday.
The mistake is ours to own – and here is exactly how it happened:
A few weeks back, we were informed by our web hosting service the website had reached its capacity on space. And, unfortunately, could no longer be hosted on a partially dedicated server.
We knew at some point that message might be coming. But we were really hoping it could wait until we were back home from our big trip. Not to be!
Mary and I may be avid gardeners, at home cooks, DIYers and now travelers – but we are certainly not high-level web experts. But there we were last week, trying to figure it all out.
All of course, while traveling a few thousand miles away from our home base.
We decided to not take the band-aid approach, and instead set up a dedicated server that could host all of our websites. That meant Old World Garden Farms, as well as Make Your Meals, This Is My Garden, and Live Simple Now.
We knew in the long run it was the right thing to do. The speed of all of the sights would be lightening fast. And, we wouldn’t need to worry about other websites cutting into our server space.
A Little Mistake…
So there we were, in the middle of Nevada, learning how to make it all happen. And hoping we could figure it all out!
With a bit of trepidation, we ordered the space for our own server, and went to work.
We performed the move overnight on Wednesday to keep disruptions to a minimum. One by one, we transferred thousands of pages, articles, photos, comments and more.
And everything seemed to be perfect. In fact, I have to say that we were somewhat surprised we actually did it. And isn’t that just when things usually go wrong?!
An Article Vanishes…
Little did these server / internet rookies know when making major changes and moving everything, it takes up to 48 hours for all of our info on the site to move.
Thinking we were fine, we put out our usual Thursday article. And it simply disappeared. And every time we put it back up, it went away again in a few hours. Some saw the article – most didn’t.
We received a lot of emails letting us know the link was broken, but could only wait for time to pass to fix it all.
Lesson learned! Actually, it was the only small hiccup. And thankfully, all is well now. At least the article : Why Not To Use Rock Salt On Sidewalks & Driveways is now in place and working!
