If you have leftover ham from your holiday dinner, make this simple ham salad with diced ham, hard boiled eggs, relish, mayonnaise, onion, celery and mustard.
It not only makes for a fantastic spread to use for sandwiches. You can also serve it with crackers for a delicious and easy to eat appetizer dip.
But there is none easier to make than ham salad.
We have been eating ham salad for as long as I can remember. My parents would make it after every major holiday that ham was served.
They would pull the large tray of leftover ham out of the refrigerator. As I would sneak a piece or two to snack on, I wondered what they were going to make.
As a child I wasn’t a fan of ham and bean soup. I cringed when I would see them pull out the slow cooker next to the tray of ham.
But I always got excited when I saw them reach into the top pantry cabinet. That is where they stored the meat grinder.
That is when I knew that they would be making ham salad.
How To Make Ham Salad
But don’t worry, you don’t have to have a meat grinder to make this recipe. In fact, we don’t even own a meat grinder.
We use our food processor to grind the ham down into fine pieces for this recipe.
However, when we plan to make sandwiches with the ham salad we only grind half of our ham in the food processor. The other half we dice into fine pieces.
On the contrary, when we use this recipe for an appetizer dip served with crackers, we will use the food processor to grind all the ham.
The food processor can grind the meat so fine that it becomes easily spreadable when combined with the other ingredients.
The Other Ingredients
The beauty of this recipe is that you can add in any ingredients that you prefer in your ham salad.
We always add celery to this recipe to provide a little crunch to the creamy salad.
However, you could also add diced sweet red peppers in addition or in place of the celery.
And as for the mayo, you could substitute Green Yogurt for a healthier version.
No pickle relish? No worries. Add a couple of whole pickles or pickle slices to the food processor when you add the ham.
The choices really are endless and based on how you prefer your ham salad.

- 1 1/2 cups ground cooked ham
- 1 1/2 cups finely diced cooked ham
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped celery
- 2 teaspoons finely chopped onion
- 4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
- 1 cup mayonnaise, or substitute Greek Yogurt
- 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
- In a medium bowl add ham, eggs, celery, pickle relish, and onion and stir until combined.
- In a small bowl add mayonnaise and mustard and mix together until combined. Pour over ham mixture and stir to coat.
- Refrigerate at least 3 hours before serving.
Option – grind all the ham and serve as a dip.
