We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather this week – the high temperatures are in the mid 70’s and the nights cool down to the low 50’s. Our windows are open and you can feel the Autumn breeze throughout the house.

We now have enough apples from our own orchard to make apple crisp!
We now have enough apples from our own orchard to make apple crisp!

We decided that it was the ideal time to make a trip to the Apple Orchard! We picked up a few pecks of some of our favorite varieties: MacIntosh, Jonagold, Gala, and Granny Smith.   Once we returned home the cooking, canning and preserving began!

The first thing we made was our famous Apple Butter Recipe – a family favorite. We also made and canned several quarts of our sugar free applesauce.  That left us with just enough extra apples to use for snacking and to make Grandma’s traditional Apple Crisp recipe.

Although we sometimes use our Gluten and Dairy Free Apple Crisp Recipe posted on our blog, this time we chose to make this delicious dessert the way Grandma taught me.  It only takes 5 ingredients and it is ready for the oven in just minutes!  Exactly what the busy family schedule called for this week.

Quick and Easy Apple Crisp

Wash, peel and core apples. Then cut them up in bite size pieces.
Wash, peel and core apples. Then cut them up in bite size pieces.

Ingredients:
6 medium size apples
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) of room temperature unsalted butter

Instructions:

preheat oven to 350 degrees F

  1. Peel, core and cut apples into bite size chunks
  2. Place the apples in a 8×8 baking pan
  3. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp cinnamon (you can adjust to your preference)
  4. In a medium size mixing bowl combine sugar, flour, cinnamon.
  5. Add butter to mixture and cut in with a fork (I prefer to use my hands) until it resembles pea size crumbles
  6. Sprinkle mixture over top of the apples.
  7. Bake for 45-60 minutes until the top is golden and the apples are soft.
  8. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

You can serve it with vanilla ice cream, caramel topping, whipped cream, etc… but the flavors are so good that it isn’t necessary!

Enjoy!

I just made this apple crisp and it is very good. I cut the sugar in half (I used sucanant) and cut the butter by 1/3. I also added some vanilla bean and grated nutmeg to the apples, which greatly enhanced the flavor of the apples….although the apples are great without any help. This is a good basic recipe that you can add your own touches to. Thanks.
