Low Cost DIY Outdoor Seating – With A Child Size Adirondack Chair Too!

After completing 2×4 Adirondack chairs, benches, foot stools, end tables and coffee tables, it was only fitting to add a 2×4 child size Adirondack chair to the mix in order to create an outdoor sitting area for everyone!

What started as a simple project a few years back to build a couple of sturdy chairs for our farm has now grown into an entire set of comfortable, inexpensive, easy to make outdoor furniture. (See: Our Original 2×4 Adirondack Chairs)

Adirondack bench and chairs
Apparently, out “adult” 2×4 Adirondack chairs were being swiped by the kids – all leading to our latest 2×4 plans for a child size Adirondack chair.

To be honest, we wouldn’t trade out 2×4 porch and patio seating for anything.

Not only can outdoor furniture be expensive to buy, it rarely lasts more than a year or two. In fact, sometimes a single storm can take it out in an instant.

But one thing is for sure, that simply doesn’t happen with 2×4 furniture! It not only stands up to the test of time, but to Mother Nature as well.

Adding A 2×4 Child Size Adirondack Chair To The Mix

Creating the step by step plans for a child sized outdoor chair actually wasn’t our idea at all. Instead, like many of our projects, it came about after receiving multiple emails from readers asking if we could create one.

Unfortunately, it seems many who had built our full-sized Adirondack chairs and benches were losing their seats to their children and grandchildren. And they hoped, that just maybe, they would get them back if they built them their own “right-sized” chair!

Unfortunately, creating a child-size version of the Adirondack chair wasn’t as easy as simply shortening the legs. Reducing the size required reworking the angles and boards measurements for nearly every board. But we really do love how it turned out!

Creating a smaller version of the chair meant changing the angles to line up for smaller legs.

The chair is constructed entirely from (5) 2x4x8’s. It sits 25″ tall, 24 inches wide, and 25″ deep – with a full 18″ wide seat. So far, we have had everyone here from a two-year to a nine year old sit comfortably in the chair.

Not only is it unbelievably easy to build, it stands up tough to the outdoors just like the adult version. And best of all, it really does fit in well with all of the other 2×4 seating and tables for an entire sitting area for everyone!

The plans are now up in our Etsy store here : 2×4 Child Size Adirodack Chair Plans.

In addition, we also created a savings bundle set of seating plans that include the adult and child size chair, the bench, end table, coffee table and foot stool for anyone wanting to create an entire outdoor set. (Complete Set – Bundle Plans)

The mini chairs are perfect for the porch, patio, or fire pit too!

Here is to hoping the adult chairs can be held on to by the adults! 🙂 Happy DIY’ing – Jim and Mary.
